The relaxed and warm atmosphere of Sandwiches bar is a welcome mat laid out every Wednesday for all jazz cats around, looking for some full and enriching Jazz in which to immerse themselves, as well as a dinner option to indulge themselves in.
This drizzly mid-week saw a good crowd, enthusiastic and ready for their jazz injection. This week’s ensemble was local talent the Nick Tipping Trio. The group eased into their set with keyboardist James Illingworth grooving into the rhythm with bass chords as he slowly saturated the evening with his sound. The drums slipped in through the back door, and skillfully whisked itself into the structure of the piece by adding warming jazz riffs. The sudden accent of a charged single beat mushroomed the trio, and consequently the evening, into full swing
Drummer Rick Cranson provoked a strong stage presence, focused and poised at each rise and fall, displaying a virtuoso in jazz percussion, He had complete control of his art, whilst articulating the kind of jazz freedom in his air that the greatest groups endear to emulate such as John Desmond from The Doors. James Illingworth built a reliable and steady structure, easily moving in and out of the role of leader and follower. James seemed to be scatting along to his playing, which was audible sometimes, and would be enjoyable to hear properly. Illingworth demonstrated his classical capabilities well, with an amusing run through of some typical compositions. Nick Tipping didn’t fail to exhibit his strength and proficiency in the bass, with fingers absolutely controlled, and spidering their way across the strings with a concentrated life of their own. It was no surprise whose band this was, with plenty of bass solos for the audience to encounter.
A 70’s esque melody peppered some of the sound, and showed a well-executed composition that moved in and out of abstraction and realism. The food processor whirring in the bar was a bit out of sync with the rest of the band, detracting from the premises respect of the group.
A night thoroughly recommended for all jazz fiends in need of a fix, local talent very Wednesday at Sandwiches.
